The students that travel to Barneveld to follow one or more courses have one thing in common: they want to expand their knowledge in their expertise. Whether this is in the field of poultry farming, pig farming or animal feed, they all come to learn. But most of them also have an additional goal: they want to share their gained knowledge with the people back home. This is what we call ‘Train the trainer’.

The purpose of the courses at ATCI is twofold: on the one hand people with a lot of different backgrounds come to ATCI to expand their knowledge about the field they work in. Whether this is as a farmer, employee of a big business, extension worker or maybe employee at a governmental institution. They want to learn more about their field of expertise and due to this, get better at their jobs and possibly improve their living situation at home.
The second part is a very important purpose for ATCI, emphasizes trainer Ann Espeel. “Eventually, our main goal is that the knowledge the individuals gain here, will be spread in their home countries. A lot of our students are in a position where they are trainers too, just like us. That is why it is called ‘train the trainer’, we train them with giving them more knowledge and helping them, but also teach them how to impart their knowledge on others back home.”

The way in which people are taught in their home country and at Barneveld differ a lot, according to the experience of trainer Teus Korevaar. “Our method is called learning by doing, which means we teach in a very practically oriented way. In many countries going to school and learning about for example poultry, means you have to sit in a classroom and listen to a lector talking. The practical part is often neglected”.

This different way of teaching, is something the students take back to their home country and use in their work as trainers. Teus: “We usually make the link with their situation back home, and ask them for examples on how they will apply what they learned in the course in their own situation. We train them in transferring this knowledge to the people they train themselves”.
