Five decades of international education in Barneveld. A true milestone! This milestone marks half a century of dedication to delivering high-quality hands-on education, with the guiding principle of ‘learning by doing’. Practice-oriented international education for the various chains in livestock farming and in particular for poultry and pig farming.
Immediately after the Second World War, the government took measures to safeguard the food supply in the Netherlands. “Never go hungry again” was the adage. That is why there was a heavy focus on information and education and that is how the practical school in Barneveld was created. Our Dutch agriculture and horticulture and our agricultural and horticultural education are now internationally recognized as leading.
What started more than fifty years ago with a clear vision: practice-oriented and context-rich education, in line with the needs of everyday practice and underpinned by scientific knowledge, has now become an internationally recognized concept. A concept that has been propagated and rolled out in countless international projects worldwide. Over the years, thousands of international students have been trained in these projects and in the Netherlands. People who now have important responsibilities and in the various livestock and food chains.
Globally, we face countless enormous challenges. As an educational institution, we therefore remain committed to equipping our students with the knowledge, skills and mindset needed to contribute to the realization of sustainable and resilient food systems in a complex world.
The success of ATCI is partly due to the great involvement of the Dutch government and the efforts of the business community. Together with these involved partners, ATCI has grown into an important international gem.
Last but not least, I would like to express my gratitude to all our colleagues and students who have contributed to the success of international education in Barneveld. They are invaluable and have played an important role in creating a thriving international community committed to sustainable food security. Together we make the difference.
